Fact of the day: Launched on 4th October 1957, it was on 4th January 1958 that Sputnik fell to Earth from its orbit. Also on this day in 1959, Luna 1 became the first satellite to reach the environs of the Moon. Sir Isaac Newton was born on 4 January 1643 in a small village in Lincolnshire, England. He was later to unravel the basic laws of gravity amongst other things and was believed by many to be one of the greatest scientists of all time.
