Fact of the day: It was on 14th April 1912 that the Titanic struck an iceberg and sank. The two wireless operators on board sent out distress signals, but the operator on a liner almost in sight was asleep and did not receive them, but the signals were heard on both sides of the Atlantic.Later the SS Carparthia arrived and rescued about 700 people, but 1500 perished. It was also on this day but in 1894 that Thomas Edison demonstrated the kinetoscope, a device for peep-show viewing using photographs that flip in sequence.
