Fact of the day: It was on 27th July 1866 that the first trans-Atlantic Cable was successfully completed, enabling transatlantic telegraph communication to be made for the first time.It was 1680 miles long and was completed at the third attempt. Also on 27 July, but in 1949, the de Haviland Comet - the world\'s first jet propelled passenger airliner made its maiden flight. This took place on the birthday of Sir Geoffrey de Havilland.

Point to ponder: Edwin Armstrong who invented the superhet radio receiver also invented wide band FM and is credited with the invention of the regenerative receiver.
