Fact of the day: It was on 27th July 1866 that the first trans-Atlantic Cable was successfully completed, enabling transatlantic telegraph communication to be made for the first time.It was 1680 miles long and was completed at the third attempt. Also on 27 July, but in 1949, the de Haviland Comet - the world\'s first jet propelled passenger airliner made its maiden flight. This took place on the birthday of Sir Geoffrey de Havilland.

Point to ponder: Michael Faraday who discovered many of the basic foundations of electrical science was the son of a blacksmith and received little formal education.
