Capacitor Types Infographic

There are many different types of capacitor used in electronics today - this infographic summarises the main types used with their salient properties and the typical value ranges.

When working with electronics circuits it's absolutely essential to understand which capacitors should be used in different areas of the circuit.

It is very important to have a good knowledge of the different types of capacitor and their properties.Capacitors like aluminium electrolytic (often just called electrolytic capacitors) have larger values

They can often take higher current levels, but their frequency range is limited to low frequencies.

Ceramic capacitors tend to be available in lower values and they perform well at higher frequencies.

Tantalum capacitors are great because the offer very high capacitance levels in a small volume, but treat them with care as they don't like high current levels of reverse bias.

Supercaps are also becoming more widespread. Having very large capacitance levels of 1F or more they are ideal for use as hold up sources.

There are several different types of ceramic used in these capacitors and these provide different properties: stability, size, temperature coefficient, etc.

This means its necessary to select the right type for the given application.
